Okay, so I recently introduced a new character into my current Work in Progress novel. And yes, it is based on the often overlooked creature that is the cuttlefish. Why did I look to this rather simple animal for inspiration, you ask? Well, several reasons actually, but I guess the most prosaic would be because I like how they look.
1. Shotgun: Pump-action, ala Arnie in T2
2. Chainsaw Arm: Must chop off own hand beforehand
3. Electric Carving Knife: The sound by itself is horrifying
So, my first piece of published work was a short story entitled ‘The Black Bird’ for a charming anthology run by the sadly now defunct Wyvern Publications. I remember being very excited when it got selected for publication. I suspected that royalties would be minor, but at that fledgling time, I didn’t care.
I shrank into the pillar. I became a spot of dust on its jet surface, joining a million others in an ever-moving river. They jostled and pushed in a swiftly moving current. Where did I go? Where would the ocean belch me out? I pictured me toppling over the edge of the world in a paper boat. The unknown waited below, full of cloaking spray and suggestive eyes. I would fall…and the world would forget me.
I recently watched the anime film The Case of Hana and Alice. See below for my flash review thoughts:
At first glance, the gate seemed deceptively normal. But as I approached, I noticed a subtle visual disturbance on the metal bars. Tiny yellow sparks danced from top to bottom. Beyond, all was mist – aside from the nearby purple tower.
A garnet river burst towards me. I ducked. A gauntleted hand helped me down, but too slowly. A barb whistled through my hair, grazing my temple. I felt individual hairs part, sliced away by the keenest of knives. A calm voice whispered that fate protected me. Rash had dragged me down just enough to avoid instant death.
